Lost 40+ pounds using this eating plan in 2015 and have kept it off easily ever since. This plan is not a "diet", but a lifestyle change and is the only one that has worked for me. With this weight loss plan and lifestyle change, I feel that I have finally found the golden key to sustaining a healthy body weight for life.
I bought this book a couple years ago off of Brad's website as a little PDF e-book, though the first edition was published back in 2007. Little did I know the popularity that fasting was gaining and would continue to in the next couple of years. Brad's background is as someone who left the supplement industry after questioning some of the practices within. He became obsessed with the simple science of losing fat, not the latest diet fad in the most recent edition of Muscle and Fitness. This little e-book, now expanded, touted the simple idea of fasting as a better way to lose weight, because quite simply - all diets fail because we just don't have the willpower to keep resisting during caloric restriction. Enter fasting. Eat Stop Eat predates other modern fasting books out there, with maybe the exception of the Warrior Diet and some work by Martin Berkhan on Leangains.Brad confronts all the myths against fasting. He shows the health benefits of fasting, which are more than just fat loss. He gives the Eat Stop Eat prescription, which is simply one or two 24-hour fasts per week. He talks about shorter fasts and longer fasts and why 24-hours is the best choice in his opinion. He talks about insulin and the fasted vs fed state, which was sort of eye-opening for me. There is a Q & A at the end which should answer most people's questions. All in all, this book is ground zero for people interested in intermittent fasting. IF is becoming part of the rebel scientific community's answer to the now failed government prescription for weight loss (high-carb, low fat, three meals a day plus "healthy" snacks). As I noted in my title, this book was one of the books that likely started the tide turning toward IF as a preferred way to lose weight (Another was the Warrior Diet). Homage is given to Brad Pilon's work by Jason Fung in his book, The Obesity Code. As one reviewer said, this simple little book was a game changer. It's too bad that this did not get the popularity it deserves. My own success is that I have had a ton of difficulty losing fat, but after trying IF thanks in no small part to this book - the weight comes off rather easily and painlessly once I got used to a 24-hour fast. What fat loss used to take me a week of hunger and lifting and cardio now simply takes me 24-hours of self-control a day or two per week. But, even if I decide to indulge, I'm never more than a couple days away from a fast that will counter it.I would also suggest reading works by Jason Fung and Gary Taubes. They both encourage either low-carb / keto diets. Low carb combined with IF seems to help me with dietary compliance since I'm fuller due to my food choices.
Eat Stop Eat changed my life. I love books that go against the common wisdom and can support their argument, and Brad Pilon does so in this book when he asks the question, "What would happen if you skipped a meal every now and then?" The answer is (surprisingly, given common wisdom), that you don't die. In fact, not only does your body have a chance to burn some of the fat it's been storing for just such an occasion, but the research Pilon has uncovered shows a whole bunch of evidence that there may be other, wide-ranging health benefits too, from better performance during workouts for some to better sleep! If you've been trying the "5 or 6 small meals a day" and it's not working, or if you've been trying the "bulking diets" designed to pack on muscle but all you've put on is fat, then this is the book that will finally end the vicious cycle as it did for me, a person who has struggled with their weight all their life. Read the book to find out how to fast for best results. During my first fast, I lost three pounds...over the course of six months, I lost 50!
What a common sense approach to weight loss. I read this in about two hours and I appreciate the authors ability to explain the science behind his approach while still speaking laymen. Honestly as I read I kept waiting for the catch. But, there’s no catch. No miracle, no quick fix. I have just finished my first 24 hour fast and it was painless. I can create no excuse why this program isn’t 100 percent doable. Now we’ll see how well this works.
Just bought this book, loved it. I'm starting to apply some of the key points already, as a cronic dieter, it almost takes some "unlearning". By that I mean etting go of all the dietary tip and tricks, excluding food groups, and food fear. It's so simply simply it's easy to want to make it complicated, because that's how losing weight usually is and we have become accustomed to that. I'm going to hide my scale for 2 months, follow Brads teachings, and post an update in two months on not only weight loss, but also ease, likes and dislikes.4/29/18 Rediscovering my "normal" on eating days is providing to be more difficult than anticipated. For so long I've been guided by a diet program of some kind or another, that I don't know really what I want to eat. I keep the words "eat a variety and eat responsibly" in my mind, but other than that I feel like a little kid in Toy-R-Us, so many choices, it's very freeing to have so many options.
This book was recommended in an article that I was reading. Started the fasting program and it is working! I tend to be an emotional eater , plus I just enjoy food ! The book makes sense & is a easy read!
The info on the benefits of fasting is nothing new, but how he explains this type of fasting that you can easily apply it to your life is great.
I really enjoyed this book. It's easy to read, but still has a lot of useful information. It's a short read but it definitely helped answer some of the questions I had about intermittent fasting. I would recommend this book.
